Sitting out in direct sunlight and using tanning beds are two of the worst things you can do for your skin, as both may cause the skin to dry out over time and creating an abundance of wrinkles. Long sun exposure leads to burns, dryness and accelerated aging of the skin.

Clothes: the first line of defense.

Wide brim hats, long sleeve shirts and long trousers will provide the best sun protection. Dark clothes are more effective as they absorb harmful ultraviolet, however they take in the heat as well and that might be very uncomfortable in hot weather. Lace fabrics let too much light through and wet clothes let ultraviolet through so make sure you dry properly after swimming.

Sunglasses.

When buying sunglasses we should consider more than just fine shape or fashionable frame. Dark lenses decrease the brightness of the light but at the same time they make pupils expand thus allowing more ultraviolet rays on the delicate retina of the eye. Ultraviolet light can damage retina and eventually cause visual impairment. Yellow or pink lenses are less effective and less safe than dark-green, dark-brown or dark-grey. Avoid using glasses with mirror lenses as they focus harmful rays on the most sensitive areas like eyelids, chin and earlobes.

Sun blocks and sunscreens.

Sun blocks or sunscreens are the next “step of defense”; they block ultraviolet light by dispersing it or by reflecting it off the skin. Sun blocks and sunscreens are available in the form of ointments, creams or lotions; they contain titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, kaolin and talc.

Sun blocks are undoubtedly effective means of skin protection although due to the thick consistence they can stain the clothing. Thick paste of zinc oxide applied on the skin could cause inflammation and spots.
For the best results apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going out in the sun. Do not rub it in as it should form a protective film on the surface of the skin.

Sunscreens are creams which absorb ultraviolet rays. When used properly they protect the skin against sunburns and intensive suntan. Sunscreens include such ingredients as para-aminobenzoic acid and its derivatives, benzophenones, derivatives of cinnamic, salicylic and sulfonic acids.

Sometimes sunscreens themselves may become the cause of trouble, para-aminobenzoic acid and its derivatives in particular can provoke allergies for novocaine or hair dye with para-phenylendiamine. If your skin is prone to spots you should make sure that sunscreen is not comedogenic i.e. does not exacerbate acne.
